In addition to the SMA astronomical database, this system can also be used for other archiving purposes at the SMA. For example, the DERSDB - the SMA engineering database for the Diagnostic and Error Reporting System (DERS), the DOCDB - the SMA design documentation database, the STAR - the star catalogue for optical pointing and etc. are also managed by Sybase. The system configuration and setup can be shared between all the databases for different archiving purposes. The template of the utility software, e.g. the Java GUI developed for SMADB, can be used for other databases.
Besides the archive for the SMA raw visibility data, we also need to develop and implement additional databases for calibrators at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. In this system, we need to incorporate all the calibration information, such as the results from observations for flux density calibration, phase calibrators, bandpass profiles, etc..
In addition, as discussed in the SMA project book (by Karl Menten and Patricia Monger 1993), a comprehensive, reliable, and continually maintained spectral line catalogue is needed to store within the on-line data system.
